How to enable voice calls in Galaxy Tab 10.1

An active call in the Galaxy Tab 10.1
After a long, long wait, a mod has finally risen that'd enable the sleek Galaxy Tab 10.1 to do voice calls without much bugs or lags. Not too many weeks ago, an XDA senior member, almaqdad came out with the first ever mod that'd enable Galaxy Tab 10.1 to make voice calls and the prominent feature is -- it'd work in most of the roms, even in Jelly Bean. The only limitation is that the mod currently works only on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 3G version, the GT-P7500.

I own myself a Galaxy Tab 10.1 3G and I have the stock ICS 4.0.4 installed. When the mod first came out, I was one among the first users to try it out and boy, how glad I was to see it working. I have been waiting for one for a long time and I knew a mod could be made for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 but for the past months, none appeared. But now, I can finally use my tab as a mobile device to make important calls. I know most of you would think -- what sense does it make to call from a 10.1" device? What a foolishness it'd be? But you know, Samsung doesn't very much care about their old devices. But to make wonder happen in such devices would be far more satisfying. In the same way, enabling a never-will-happen feature on a device is definitely a miracle for me. It'd be difficult to make calls in such a large device and I know that for obvious reasons. But something is better than nothing, right? Same way, enabling voice-call in the tab just increases its usefulness even though people very rarely would use it for calls.

The Galaxy Tab dialer.
A prominent feature of the mod is that there are very little bugs including ones like the call screen won't auto-turn landscape once you make call but it'd once you hit one of those buttons and trouble in calling while in 3G and other minor glitches. Also, the battery lasts as usual and there's no sudden drain I felt. However, one small annoying bug I found was that the once the screen timeouts, the call gets cancelled. However, you can avoid this trouble by installing an app called Screen On and using it to turn on the screen while in call.

That's a short review of the mod you read above. Now, if you're a Tab 10.1 owner like me, you can definitely try this mod and it'd just make your tablet better. Only requirements is that your tab must be having a custom recovery like the clockworkmod installed. Installing clockworkmod is easy and if you have rooted your phone, you must've already installed the clockworkmod recovery along with the process. There's no mentioning of any root permissions to install the mod, however, mine was rooted when I tried it.

Now, I will show you how to enable the voice-call option on your Galaxy Tab in a few steps. Note that this tutorial only applies if you are running the stock ICS 4.0.4 rom. If you are running other roms, the files used in the tutorial may vary. Please do not try this if you are not running the stock ICS. Also, make sure you take a backup of your rom before you begin the process. And as always, do it at your own risk -- well, it's not that risky though.
  1. Download these two files:
  2. Copy the downloaded files to your device.
  3. Reboot into recovery. To do this, turn off your device. Now, hold power and volume down buttom together. Now, press volume down button to select recovery and then press volume up button. You'll enter the recovery.
  4. Select install zip from sd card and then choose zip from sd card. First, select the file CWM_I9103XXLQ3_Modem.zip and install it.
  5. Now, again select install zip from sd card and install Voice Call Enable [Stock] ICS 4.0.4 ROM Build 1.zip.
  6. Once you've installed both files, go back to the main menu and select advanced and choose Wipe Dalvik Cache. Optionally, you may also choose to Wipe Cache from the main menu.
  7. Now, select reboot. If tab doesn't reboot, enter recovery again and Wipe Cache.
  8. If you are having issues with the call being cut off when the screen turns off, download Screen On app from the Play Store and use it to turn the screen on during a call.
  9. Voila! Now, the phone app would appear on your main menu and calling functions would be added to your other apps. You can also change call options via settings menu. That's it! Enjoy voice call on your Tab!
If you're using Cyanogenmod or AOKP -- ICS or JB, then visit the original thread here to download the files for your rom. Follow the same steps but download and copy the files of your rom to your device. If you are having trouble installing the mod, just leave a comment and I'll look it up for you. Don't forget to rate the post and give your feedbacks on the mod to me. Will be back with more stuff next time.

I conclude the post my expressing my sincere gratitude to almaqdad for providing us with such a useful mod. I owe you one amigo. :)

Adios!
